Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most famous film series
in Hollywood. Every character in the film has played a fantastic role. But, the
character of Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed by the famous actor Johnny Depp is
the most favorite of all the Pirates of the Caribbean fans. Pirates of the
Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was the first film of this famous
series and a blockbuster.
Here are some behind the scenes facts about the film.
Long Development
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was
released in the year 2003. It was directed by Gore Verbinski and written by Ted
Elliot and Terry Rossio. The development history of this film was much longer
than in 2003. The writers of this film pitched the movie to Disney in the year
1990. Even the director Steven Spielberg considered directing this movie at a
time when he got the script in his hands.
Johnny Depp Almost Wasn’t Jack Sparrow
It is almost impossible to imagine anyone else playing the
character of Captain Jack Sparrow instead of Johnny Depp. Depp played the role
of Jack perfectly and was the most lovable character of the Pirates of the
Caribbean series. However, several actors could play the role of Jack Sparrow
before Depp signed on. When director Steven Spielberg was considering directing
this film in 1990, he wanted to assign the role of Jack Sparrow to Steve
Martin, Bill Murray, and Robin Williams. Also, the co-writer Stuart Beattie
wrote the plot of the film considering Hugh Jackman for the role of Jack
Sparrow.
Orlando Bloom As Will Turner
Even though Jack Sparrow was the most entertaining character in
the movie, the real hero of the film was Will Turner. Turner was one of the
skilled swordsmen who rescued the girl and killed the bad guys. While the
filmmakers were casting for the character of Will Turner, Orlando Bloom and
Heath Ledger both were under consideration, but Orlando Bloom got the
opportunity to play the role of Will Turner in this film. He was selected for
this role because of his tremendous work in the movie, The Lord of the Rings.
However, Bloom wanted to play the role of Will as cool as Jack Sparrow, but the
director of the film insisted Bloom to play the role of Will as a dork because
the character of Will Turner was not much more relaxed.
Kiera Knightley
The famous Hollywood actress Kiera Knightley played the role of
Elizabeth Swann in this film. When Kiera was cast for this film, she was only
17 years old and was always accompanied by her mother on the entire shoot of
the film.
Travel Trouble
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a
beautiful movie because of its real locations where it was filmed. The cast and
crew of the film traveled via boats to several Caribbean islands to shoot for
the film. During a night shoot on one of these islands, a boat carrying Kiera
and her mother hit a rock and started sinking. However, no one was injured, but
they had to wait for several hours to get rescued.
Depp’s Ideas For Jack Sparrow
Johnny Depp was very excited about the character of Jack Sparrow
that he would be able to create. He had a lot of ideas for the look of Jack
Sparrow. When he first met with the director of this film to discuss the role
of Jack Sparrow, he was told that Captain Jack would have no nose and be afraid
of pepper, and Jack would have all gold teeth. However, the studio did not
agree with these ideas of Depp and said that Jack could have only a few gold
teeth.
Production Was Almost Shut Down
Even though this film was a great hit, Disney Studios did not
have much faith in this film. Michael Eisner, who was the president of Disney,
wanted to cut his losses and shut down production underway. It was the director
of the film, Gore Verbinski, who showed him some different concept that
convinced him and the film was a great success. After learning all behind the
scenes facts about Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, we
have concluded that there were several moments, stories, and ideas that made
the film beautiful. It is one of the best films of the Pirates of the Caribbean
series.
