Mediocrity and Myths in Raji: An Ancient Epic

Nodding Heads Games created their first action-adventure video game titled Raji: An Ancient Epic. The game was exclusively released on 18 August 2020 for Nintendo Switch and on 15 October 2020 for Microsoft Windows via PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Epic Games Store.

The game is based on Indian history and Hindu mythology, and its impressive presentation made the game popular among the fans. However, the disappointing ending and short run-time have a negative impact on the game.

Raji: An Ancient Epic is set in ancient India and follows Raji, who lives with her younger brother Golu and they both work as the circus performer. One day on the festival of Rakshabandhan, a group of demons with their leaders and lord Mahabalasura surrounded the circus. They slaughter everyone in the circus and kidnap the children to use them for some unknown and dark purpose. During the chaos, Raji tries to save her beloved brother from the demons, but she fails and is left for dead.

Later, Raji wakes up and can not find her brother Golu, who is also missing, like the rest of the children. She determines to save and rescue her younger brother and prays to the goddess Durga, known as the goddess of war. Goddess Durga gives Raji a sacred weapon to save her brother along with other children.

Nodding Heads Games might not have enough budget to make a game of the modern God of War, but it has appreciably achieved the historical and mythological wonder. The game also includes various voiceovers from Lord Vishnu and Goddess Durga in different parts of the game. The creators also engaged the game with many other Hindu mythological stories as the plot. The blessings of legend Garuda, Shakti, and many others help and teach Raji through paintings and artworks which provide players with an engaging game sequence.

Overall, Raji: An Ancient Epic is not very exciting, but that does not mean it is enjoyable. The weapons in this game are distinct, simple, and very empowering. The game’s plot is very casual and provides a straight path to the players other than in a few sequences when things occasionally mix up.

Raji is a noticeably short game of five hours, and the game ends at a cliffhanger with well-paced storytelling. However, this is the first game from Nodding Heads, and perhaps fans can expect more from the Indian team.
